Night of Long Knives – Perpetrators

The key individuals responsible for this mass murder were:

  • Adolf Hitler – Reich Chancellor who ordered the mass murder
  • Hermann Göring – President of the Reichstag, Minister President of Prussia (and thus in control of Prussian police) and Reichsstatthalter of Prussia
  • Heinrich Himmler – SS-Reichsführer and chief of all German police outside Prussia
  • Reinhard Heydrich – chief of Gestapo and head of the SD – Nazi Party domestic and foreign intelligence service
  • Joseph Goebbels (surprisingly) – Reichsminister of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda and Gauleiter of Berlin
  • Sepp Dietrich – commander of the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler (LSSAH) unit
  • Theodor Eicke, Commandant of the Dachau concentration camp

 

The key organizations responsible for this mass murder were:

  • Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler (LSSAH) – Adolf Hitler’s personal bodyguard unit. Initially regiment-size, it eventually grew into an elite division-sized detachment (1st SS Panzer Division)
  • Landespolizeigruppe – Göring’s personal police battalion. It ultimately grew into 1st Fallschirm-Panzer Division Hermann Göring – an elite German Luftwaffe armoured division
  • Gestapo – formally a secret political police of the German state, by the time of the Night of the Long Knives it was already under firm control of the SS
  • SD – domestic and foreign intelligence service of the Nazi Party
