To get a proper understanding of Nazi Germany, it is very important to always keep in mind that it was not the only dictatorship in Europe at that time. In fact, dictatorships (authoritarian and totalitarian political systems/regimes) were quite common in Europe in the ‘20s, ‘30s, ‘40s and even beyond.
Consequently, to properly understand Nazi Germany, it is very important to compare and contrast the Third Reich with other European dictatorship of that time – Italy, Spain, Portugal, Romania and, first and foremost, the Soviet Union.
Likewise, to properly understand Adolf Hitler, one must compare and contrast him with other European dictators of that time – Benito Mussolini, Francisco Franco, Antonio Salazar and, first and foremost, Joseph Stalin.
And that’s exactly what I will do in this section of the book.
